Give to the Institute

Thank you for your interest in supporting the Carter G. Woodson Institute for African-American and African Studies. Your contribution will enhance and subsidize a range of the Institute’s programs, events and activities:

  • The Undergraduate Program in African-American and African Studies and its related components—

Emerging Scholars Program, which identifies gifted students and helps prepare them for graduate school

Small grants to students enrolled in the Distinguished Majors Program, enabling them to pursue primary research and travel to archives

Study abroad programs in Africa and the Caribbean, enabling us not only to develop these programs but also to subsidize fees for our students who seek to participate in international study

  • The Woodson Fellowship Program, enabling us to provide funds for conference travel, research expenses, and for maintaining up-to-date computers, printers and software
  • The Woodson Lecture Series, enabling us to bring to grounds outstanding scholars in African-American and African Studies and related fields
  • Local history projects, enabling us to support scholarship documenting the experiences of African-Americans in Central Virginia
  • Community Outreach, enabling us to strengthen and sustain our programs in local schools, and to continue such public forums as “Currents in Conversation,” which bring together Charlottesville residents and members of the University community to discuss current issues of pressing import to the public
